Smail — Letters to Your Future Self

[Dyna: write your one-line hook here — who Smail is for and what it does. See §1 Title & Overview in smail-case-study-notes.md.]

Role: Solo — research, UX, UI design, prototype build

Timeline: MAUXD Capstone, Summer 2026 – present

Tools: Figma, Vite / React / TypeScript / Tailwind, Lyssna

Platform: iOS app + home-screen widget — Responsive Website case study type

The Problem

Survey finding (confirm n before publishing — proposal cites 9 respondents, raw export has 12): forgetting to use the app and cost were the top adoption concerns. ~83% concept appeal. 75% wanted a physical pairing.

[Dyna: write the problem framing in your own voice. Reference: primary audience — the "busy reflector" (20s–40s); secondary audience — the "meaningful gifter"; cited wellbeing research grounding the space. See §2 The Problem in smail-case-study-notes.md.]

Research

5 user interviews (P1–P5) — Amelia, Kait, Joanne, Naiyara +1

6 documented findings, each with evidence, interpretation, and a V1/V2 product decision

Research synthesis: Mirafleur User Journey V2.4 — Notice → Reflect → Schedule → Resurface → Review & Grow

[Placeholder: pull 2–3 direct participant quotes here from the User Interview Synthesis Report — not yet transcribed into this page.]

[Dyna: write the research synthesis in your own voice — this is your strongest section. See §3 Research in smail-case-study-notes.md for the full finding-by-finding breakdown.]

Concept & Ideation

Rebrand: Mirafleur (gratitude capture) → Smail (a private letter to your future self) — grounded in research showing stronger emotional value in receiving a personal message from a past self.

[Dyna: write the ideation rationale in your own voice — the two hi-fi directions explored, and why the softer neumorphic "Version A" was chosen. See §4 Concept & Ideation in smail-case-study-notes.md.]

Prioritization & Roadmapping

MVP features: letter composition, return timing, widget arrival channel, privacy controls, notes/reminders

Capstone II (15-week plan): A/B retest, working widget, 2-week field study, storage/auth, security

[Dyna: write the prioritization narrative in your own voice. See §5 Prioritization & Roadmapping in smail-case-study-notes.md — sitemap/task-flow ownership vs. Wellness Hub is still an open question.]

Branding (Bonus)

Smail brand foundations: color system, typography, and neumorphic component library

Colors: Primary/Rose #D46D7A · Secondary/Navy #18357B · Warning #F8B857 · Success #016C4E · Error #D40C19 · Background #F8F4EE

Typography: Poppins (UI, Futura-inspired) · IBM Plex Mono (letter content)

System: Neumorphism with embossed borders; WCAG contrast reviewed across a dark-mode and alternate theme

[Dyna: write the Mirafleur → Smail rebrand story in your own voice — it's a ready-made before/after. See §6 Branding in smail-case-study-notes.md.]

Wireframes to UI

Mobile — hi-fi (primary format, complete)

Tablet — second format (the confirmed gap: 0 of 3+ required screens exist yet)

Placeholder for tablet screens — Dyna to design and add manually. Decided: tablet-specific design, not the mobile flows relaid out. Still open: which concept — (a) the same 5 flows reimagined for a bigger screen, or (b) a genuinely tablet-specific experience (e.g. a "write from your desk" composer or a widget-configuration dashboard). Needs 3+ lo-fi and matching hi-fi tablet screens.

[Dyna: once the tablet concept is set, write the wireframes-to-UI progression narrative here. See §7 Wireframes to UI in smail-case-study-notes.md.]

Testing & Iteration

System Usability Scale: 93.5% ("Excellent") — 5 participants, moderated think-aloud sessions

6 major findings, each with quoted evidence, a finding type, and an explicit V2 decision

V1 → V2 changes already implemented: renamed primary action, widget defaults to OFF, past-self resurfacing made the emotional center, gentle reminders added

[Dyna: write the testing-showed-X-so-I-changed-Y narrative in your own voice. See §8 Testing & Iteration in smail-case-study-notes.md for the full finding-by-finding breakdown.]

Outcome & Impact

Not written yet. Raw material: the proposal's success criteria — sustained appeal past one session, users distinguish delivery types, widget behaves predictably, defensible storage/auth/security decisions.

[Dyna: write the outcome & impact narrative in your own voice once you're ready. See §9 Outcome & Impact in smail-case-study-notes.md.]

Reflection & Growth

Not started — makes sense to hold until Capstone II work (widget build, field study) is further along, since the honest reflection will cover more ground than what exists today.

[Dyna: write your reflection in your own voice once Capstone II is further along. See §10 Reflection & Growth in smail-case-study-notes.md.]
